Samuel Beckett's defining 20th-century masterpiece of existential absurdity follows two tramps, Vladimir and Estragon, as they wait endlessly by a barren tree for a man named Godot who never arrives. In James Macdonald's landmark West End revival, Jonathan stepped into the commanding, tyrannical shoes of Pozzo. Driving his exhausted servant Lucky by a rope, his bombastic arrival abruptly shatters the quiet desperation of the waiting duo, bringing a terrifying yet pitiable energy to this profound meditation on time and human existence.

I played Pozzo in a production of WAITING FOR GODOT by Samuel Beckett at the Royal Haymarket in 2024, directed by James Macdonald and starring Ben Wishaw and Lucian Msamati.

I had never done Beckett before and I was initially dismayed at the readthrough on the first day.Not only was the meaning of the play elusive, but it just felt flat and lacking any humour or excitement. However, the journey from that first rehearsal to the first time we did it in front of an audience was the most extreme of any in my career. The answer lay in forensic detail. Beckett’s writing does not give you an awful lot of clues so it is important for us to fill in the gaps in considered and intelligent ways. Once we did that the play flew.

I can teach you how to apply the same rigour to your work and unlock your material.
